There’s nothing better than venturing out the great outdoors with your mountain bike. And if you’re like me who loves to seek adventure even when the sun is setting, then you better get a mountain bike light.
But with a plethora of mountain bike lights available around, it can be a bit confusing which one to buy. That’s why seeing you here in this article is no accident.
Today, I am going to list down the best mountain bike lights that are available in the market today. So before you grab your wallet, sit back and take a look at my reviews below.
Our Picks of 2023
1. Victagen USB Rechargeable Bike Light
Want a heavy-duty mountain bike light? Then look no further with the victagen bike light. This one ticks all the right boxes at a price that won’t hurt your wallet.
For less than $50, you get plenty of benefits that will make your night riding sessions a breeze. What I love about this one is its IP65 waterproofing capability. I tried it out when there was heavy rainfall and the bike light still works well.
Another feature that I found useful is its universal clip. Since I own lots of bikes that come in different form factors, I can just clip the light without hassle. It also has other lighting functions if you want to use it as a helmet mounted bike light or a tail light.
Not to mention, it has a maximum of 2400 lumens and lasts up to six hours of continuous usage before the battery drains out. You can also use a power pack to charge the bike light via the USB port too. This feature takes this bike light’s convenience to the next level!
2. VASTFIRE Mountain Bike Light
Get double the benefits with the VASTFIRE mountain bike light Package. This is one of the best mountain bike headlights because it comes with two bike lights for the price of one. The first light is the usual mountain bike light, and the second one is a red light for emergency purposes.
I personally love this mountain bike light kit because it is like buying two bike lights for only a single price. What’s best is that both lights are waterproof, so you don’t have to worry how many storms may come in the way.
Aside from the usual micro-USB ports, this light features a fast-charging Type-C charger. And to my surprise, the battery went to full in less than an hour. Above the main light is a led indicator that notifies you when the battery is getting low.
Regarding installation, it can be installed easily without the need for tools. On the other hand, the build is made from an aluminum alloy that screams durability in every angle. This material makes the bike lights more lightweight compared to its competitors that have a metal build. Moreover, the ergonomic design of the lights is comfortable to the hands, making it lightweight while sturdy at the same time
3. Magicshine Rechargeable Mountain Bike
If you’re looking for the best mountain biking lights that also double as headlights, then this product is for you. The Magicshine bike light gives you the best of both worlds of versatility and functionality.
The package comes with a helmet strap where you can attach the light. At first, I thought you need a specific helmet that is compatible with the straps. But it attaches perfectly well on mine with ease.
This helmet light itself has four different modes that you can interchange whenever you want. The maximum brightness rate is 1200 lumens, which is pretty okay for the price. But because of its small form factor, some other compromises are made as well.
This includes the battery capacity of the light. I tested it out at 100% max brightness and the light only lasted for about 2 hours and a half. And the fact that it comes with the traditional micro-USB port results in longer charging times.
4. Bright Eyes FBA_AQPP-4 Mountain Bike Light
If you want the best night mountain bike light that lasts long, then look no further with this one. This bike light has everything you need for those hours of nighttime bike rides.
So what’s the deal with this one? First off, it has a massive 6400mAh battery that lasts for almost a day, depending on your chosen settings. This is such a huge battery capacity for a mountain bike light. It can also fit no matter how thin or thick your handlebars are.
The package comes with a free diffuser lens for your daytime bike ride sessions too. The light has three modes: low, medium, and heavy. Low setting lasts for up to 16 hours of continuous usage, 6 hours on medium, and 4 hours on heavy. The light can be charged using a wall charger or via a battery pack, which goes hand in hand with its compact design.
5. Vont Scope Bike Light
MTB bike lights are usually designed to blend in with your bike. But the Vont Scope bike light looks like a strap-on mini flashlight for your bike. This made me think that it’s not made with aesthetics in mind.
But that’s just me, and a simple design never hurts the functionality of the product. So let’s talk about the benefits of this product now. This bike light is made from military-grade materials for ultimate durability. So no matter what happens, this bike light can survive a beating.
Although small in size, its led light can illuminate objects even if it’s 1000 feet away. This mountain bike night riding lights also has pressure and water-resistant capabilities for an added layer of security. And to test its durability, I made a 10-foot drop test of this light and it survived with minimal scratches only.
6. Te-Rich Mountain Bike Light
Easy installation, bright LED, and versatile usage? This perfectly describes the Te-Rich mountain bike light. This one has a big 4400mAh battery that can last up to 12 hours of usage depending on the light intensity and can go as high as 1500 lumen bike light.
The design is very simple yet compact making it blend well with the bike without looking out of place. It’s also easy to install without using any extra tools. Just adjust the clip to fit on your handlebar, screw it into place using your fingers, and then you’re done.
This mtb headlight can be doubled as a headlight too because of its mounting mechanism. The LED has a maximum of 1200 lumens just like a magicshine bike light. But what surprised me the most is that it’s so bright where it can light up to 100 yards based on my testing.
7. Wastou Premium Waterproof Bike Light
This bike light is another bike light set that has two products for a single price. The Wastou Waterproof bike lights come with a headlight and taillight in one package. And for a price of less than $25, this is a sweet deal for those on a budget.
Wastou is generous for including a USB cable in the package too. Although I already have plenty of USB cords at home, the one that comes with it makes the lights charge faster. I guess the bundled cable works best for the product when it comes to compatibility.
Both the headlight and taillight have an IPX6 rating waterproofing. So rest assured that no amount of heavy rain can break this duo. Though keep in mind that the headlight has an all-aluminum build while the taillight has a plastic one.
But I guess this is fine since the front headlight is exposed more hence the need for a strong build material. I love the front headlight because it has 85 degrees of illumination to make those darker areas on the sides well-lit.
The taillight, on the other hand, looks cheaply made. It doesn’t even shine so bright but I can live with it for the price. I think this is also because of the plastic build of the taillight, making it look even cheaper. It’s surely a great idea to use this as a night mountain biking light.
8. Ascher 2474358 Rechargeable Bike Light
I’ve been suggesting bike light sets for the past few sections above. So I decided to go overboard with it. The Ascher bike light set is all about aesthetics and functions combined into one.
Just like the previous products above, this is also a headlight and taillight bundle. Both the headlight and taillight are equipped with rubber straps for easy installing. This enables the lights to adapt whatever size your handlebar or under-seat bars are.
Two separate USB cables are bundled with the product, which are both dedicated to the headlight and taillight. And upon testing, both cables perform fast when charging the lights via a wall charger, power pack, and even my laptop, which makes this go on par with magicshine bicycle lights.
The most annoying part is where I have to use zip ties to keep the headlight into place since it kind of wobbles a bit. Though I’m getting used to it now since this problem is prominent in mountain bike lights. It’s also what you need if you are looking for budget mtb lights or gloworm lights.
The taillight wobbles as well but not as severe as the headlight. But there are times where I have to reposition it whenever I hit a speed bump on the road. However, this problem is only minor and doesn’t distract me from my bike riding experience.
9. Gyhuego USB Rechargeable Bike Light
Shine brighter with the Gyhuego bike light. This product has a maximum brightness of 4000 lumens, which is huge for just a bike light alone. This is the brightest mountain bike light I used in my entire life and I love it.
This bike light is shaped like a mini power pack because of its rectangular form factor. What I like about this one is its 360 degrees rotate function that lets me shine the light no matter where I want.
The design alone is very eye-candy. This makes the bike light a must-have for those who are in for the aesthetics. The mix of black and grey is very pleasing to the eyes and matches my dark-colored bikes too.
It’s also bundled with a taillight just like the previous products before this one. The best part? The taillight is just as premium-looking as the headlight. But before that, I want to express how I love the lighting capability of the headlight.
Talking about a safety feature, the insane 4000-lumen brightness is a godsend. I was shocked when I tested it out last night riding and the light covered 1,640 feet of space. This makes nighttime bike ride sessions safer because everything will be lit up on the path.
Although the mounting system is, again, a little wobbly, I was able to ride around rocky paths with little to no problems. The taillight, however, was more stable thanks to its non-slip silicone band strap. This is a very good thing especially that it can be bought for as little as $30.
There will be times when you have to reposition the headlight if you are riding along bumpy roads. Just always keep an eye on it in case it will suddenly fall off your bike.
10. CECO-USA High-Grade Bike Light
CECO-USA is a well-known brand when it comes to bike lights. And their new 1000 lumen bike light is another worthy addition to their product catalog. So what does this big bike light brand have to offer? Let’s have a look.
After getting tired of wobbly mountain bike lights, this one feels like a breath of fresh air for me. This is thanks to the durable Zetel material bracket tab mount that holds the light into place. So no matter how bumpy the road can get, it will stay put without the extra wobbling.
Since this is made in the USA, the product is made with quality in mind. I can even already feel its toughness and durability the first time I used it.
This mountain bike light features a special feature called “LOCK MODE” that prevents accidental switching on or off while being stored inside the bag. And with its versatile night modes, you can confidently bike around during nighttime with ease.
Another factor I like about this one is it only weighs 145 grams even when it’s connected on the mount. It can also be doubled as a headlight or just a regular flashlight for your camping trips as well.
11. Keenstone Free Trail Rechargeable Bike Lights
If you want the ultimate night mountain bike lights, then look no further with this one. The Keennstone bike light set comes with four bike lights at one price. The package includes two headlights and taillights along with a dedicated charger.
One thing I noticed is that the lights are designed with versatility in mind. It looks like a mini flashlight that you can carry around and not just something you would mount on your bike. You can also attach it anywhere on your helmet, bag, or camping tent.
What I really love about this one is that it lasts up to four hours of non-stop usage. On the other hand, the build quality is made from aviation-grade aluminum, making it durable and can last long with you.
However, the only downside I noticed is that it uses traditional rechargeable batteries. This is, in my opinion, too old school for today’s time. It’s a bit odd for me since everything nowadays is powered by built-in batteries that can be charged via USB.
Luckily, there’s an included charger in the box that saves you from the trouble of buying another set of rechargeable batteries. The charger is powered by a USB cable that gives you the freedom to connect it anywhere, such as a wall socket or a power pack. This is even better than most 2000 lumen bike lights.
12. TANSOREN Waterproof Bike Headlight
If you are looking for the best mountain bike headlight, then consider getting the TANSOREN waterproof bike headlight. And to ensure their ‘military grade’ moniker is true, I performed a 10-20 feet drop test and it survived with minimal scratches only.
The light is designed solely as a mountain bike headlamp but can also be used as a bicycle light that you can attach to the handlebars. I was amazed when I tested it for the first time because it was so bright even when the lamp is small in size. The 4000 lumens rating did live up to its name and I’m happy with its results.
The light itself is made from military-grade waterproof plastic. Although the company could have gone with an aluminum build considering the price, I guess this is fine since the light became lightweight because of it.
The battery life is tremendous and lasts up to six to eight hours on maximum usage. It is water resistance as it has an IP66 waterproof rating that adds an extra layer of security to the light. So no matter how many storms or bad weather will come in the way, the TANSOREN Waterproof Bike Headlight will survive even in the toughest conditions.
What to Look for When Buying Mountain Bike Lights
Now that you have plenty of options for bike lights, you might wonder what factors you need to consider when choosing one. Whatever mountain bike you have, here are some considerations to keep in mind before you buy.
Different bike lights come with different features depending on the manufacturer. The most common ones are the flashing and strobe feature just to name a few.
Light modes or features will also depend on the price of the bike light. To help you decide which one to go for, consider your budget and in what situations you use your bike.
Most bike lights nowadays are equipped with USB charging ports for charging. This can either be the traditional micro-USB port or the newer Type-C USB port. The former is more compatible with any USB cables while the latter is limited in compatibility yet charges faster.
Single or Sets
Mountain bike lights come in single packages or in a bundle that has an included taillight. While I personally suggest the bundled version, most taillights that come with it are of low quality.
But fret not because there are bundled light sets where both the headlight and taillight are equal in quality. Though keep in mind that they are also a bit costly depending on the manufacturer.
And of course, you should never forget the maximum lumens when choosing a bike light. This factor is a no-brainer because the higher the lumen, the brighter the lights will be.
If you love to venture around deep and dark areas, then consider getting a bike light with high lumens. But if you’re just going to have a nighttime stroll around your neighborhood, then an average lumen bike light will suffice.
What are the Different Types of Mountain Bike Lights
Mountain bike lights come in different factors and functionalities. Here’s a compilation to help you determine which type suits you best.
Mounted mini flashlight
This bike light type is a multi-purpose one because of its design. As the name suggests, it is just a small flashlight that can be mounted anywhere. This includes your handlebars, helmet, or even under your bike seat.
This bike light type is powered by a traditional rechargeable battery. However, some manufacturers opted for USB ports as their charging feature. And with its compact design, it blends well on your mountain bike without looking out of place.
Another type is the headlamp. This one is made specifically as a helmet attachment.
Other variants are designed to be attached and reattached to be used as a handlebar light as well.
Headlamps are usually small in size but a beast in performance. However, the highlight of headlamps is the convenience it has because of its small size. Headlamps are usually packaged along with a helmet band so you can attach them with ease.
This one is already pretty obvious. Headlights are bike lights that are mounted in front of your bike. These are usually placed in the center or on the handlebars. Headlights can be mounted using a strap or a bracket to secure them into place.
A headlight has the highest lumen rating among the bunch. This is mainly because they are placed up front so you can see the road/path while biking. Headlights usually have a minimum lumen rating of 1000 and 4000 being the highest.
A taillight is placed under your bike seat and is usually used for safety purposes. It comes only in red color and has several lighting modes to warn other vehicles behind you. Taillights are designed to be smaller than headlights and only come with a low lumen rating.
How Many Lumens Do I Need for Mountain Biking
If you are also a nighttime adventurer like me who loves to bike around dark trails, then you are in for a treat. I highly suggest having a minimum of 1500 lumens for your handlebar lights, 800 lumens for headlamps, and 400 lumens for the taillight.
But you still have the option to go higher within these numbers depending on what you prefer. There are even bike lights that have an insane 4000 lumens which is a bit too much. An average number between 1500 to 2400 lumens is already enough for mountain biking.
Do keep in mind that there are no street lights around the mountains. That’s why having a bike light that is more than 1000 lumens is a must to ensure that your path is well-lit. You will never know what dangers are up ahead that lurks around these dark areas.
But if you are just going to bike around the neighborhood, 100 to 800 lumens should suffice considering that street lights are surrounding the area.
What are the Best Lights for Mountain Biking
With a plethora of mountain bike light products in the market, it can be hard to choose which is best for mountain biking. This also depends on the type of mountain bike you have and lighting needs too.
Not to mention, your budget comes into play in this aspect as well. But to help you out with this dilemma, here are some of the best mountain bike light brands every mountain biker should buy.
USA-based brands are all about quality. And the CELCO-USA bike lights are a primary example of this one. What’s more is that they have a wide catalog of bike light products for you to choose from too.
CELCO-USA only uses premium materials to make their bike lights. So you can tell the quality from the aesthetics itself. This is why the brand became a favorite among mountain bikers when it comes to bike lights.
Ascher Ultra is another brand that manufacturers high-quality mountain bike lights. One of the highlights of their bike lights is how it was ergonomically designed for top-notch aesthetics.
Even though their bike light products come at a low price, it feels like you are buying a costlier one because of the design alone. Not to mention, they also include dedicated fast-charging USB cables in every product.
Vont also has a wide variety of bike lights that are durable and unique at a price that won’t hurt your wallet. All of Vont’s bike lights are made to stand the test of time. This is why they implemented pressure-resistant and waterproofing capabilities for those extreme bike riding moments.
But the highlight of this brand is the affordability. Most of their bike lights won’t cost you a fortune since prices range only from $13 to $20. This is why Vont is the best bike light brand for those who are on a budget.
How Do You Install Mountain Bike Lights
There are various ways to install mountain bike lights depending on their mounting mechanism. Keep in mind that manufacturers have their own style in designing the mount. But the best part is that you don’t have to use extra tools to mount the lights on your bike.
This one is pretty simple. All you need is to adjust the strap based on the size of your handlebars. First, loosen the strap and wrap it around the handlebar.
Second, make sure that it fits perfectly and the bike light is facing upfront. Third, tighten the strap to ensure that the bike light will not fall off.
Bracket mounts come with a screw for a more secure fit. First, unscrew the bracket and make sure that the mount fits on the handlebar.
Second, position the bike light in an upright position and facing forward. Lastly, tighten the screw back to the bracket until it fits perfectly.
Frequently Asked Questions
My mountain bike light intensity seems a little weak, what should I do?
There’s a possibility that your bike light isn’t fully charged yet. Charge it again and let it sit there for an hour. If the problem persists, check the settings and see if the brightness mode is set to the highest.
Why does my headlight wobble too much?
Check the bracket or straps if they are securely tightened. Consider using alternative remedies such as zip straps so they will hold into place. If it still wobbles, adjust the bike lights’ position and put it underneath the handlebars instead of on top of it.
What is the ideal charging time for mountain bike lights?
Charging time will vary depending on the charger you use and its USB port. Traditional micro-USB ports can fully charge a bike light for an hour or two. While the newer Type-C variant only takes less than an hour.
What’s the best position for my headlights?
Headlights are best attached to your mountain bike’s handlebars. If you have double headlights, make sure that they are far apart from each other. Doing so lets them work together to illuminate a wider area in front of you.
My bike lights suddenly stopped working, what should I do?
If the product is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer immediately and request a replacement or refund.
